I am thinking about purchasing a compact tractor and would like to know what size of tractor I will need. I have been looking at the yanmars. Will they be big enough to support a b/h?
thanks
Jerry

I would recommend a YM1500 or larger for a small backhoe. They have enough hydraulic capacity to run one wothout a seperate pump. Kelley is coming out with a hoe smaller than any other on the market that could be used on tractors smaller than the YM1500.I'm giving a 20% discount on Kelley products. sheaftactor@coiinc.com ....

It sort of worked the other way around for me. The hoe determined the tractor size.
I got the tractor when I did because I couldn't get a contractor who would come to the country to install a new electrical service. It was getting late in the building year and I realized that I had to do it myself. Codes are very specific about trench depths, and I also realized that I'd may to get below our 4' frost level for water line, footings etc. So, the depth I need to trench determined the size hoe I needed, which determined the size tractor I got.
Incidentally, hoes are often speced as ‘depth at a 2' bottom’. My Kelley B600 would be called a 6' hoe because if will dig a 2' bottom @ 6'. The max depth is 6.5', but you can't actually do anything at that depth. However, in reality, digging a 6' trench with a 6' hoe isn't too realistic. With a 2' bottom, you'd spend all day repositioning the tractor every 2-foot. I happy trenching at 4’+ and start to get cranky at 5’ or so.
